Head Injury is the leading cause of disability among young adults and children. It has been termed the "silent epidemic" by the National Head Injury Foundation, an advocacy group for survivors of traumatic brain injuries and their families. The simple definition of a head injury is a trauma in which the head is struck, or moved violently, resulting in a transient (or permanent) alteration and function. By far the most prevalent cause of traumatic brain injury is motor vehicle collision.

Symptoms evidencing traumatic brain injury are wide ranging and varying in degrees, but will generally include a mixture, to some extent, of the following:

Physical:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue - usually occurs late in the process

  • Changes in sleep pattern
  • Increase sensitivity to
    light and noise
  • Changes in vision or
    hearing
  • Changes in smell or
    taste

Emotional:

  • Lability (mood
    swings)
  • Irritability
  • Depression
    Anxiety

Cognitive / Intellectual:

  • Decreased tension / concentration
  • Decreased mental speed
  • Decreased divided
    attention
  • Short term memory
    problems

The more severe the injury, the greater compilation of symptoms are mixed with greater symptomology to the individual. Medical care is often expensive and involves a multi-disciplinary approach, including involvement from a neurologist, neuropsychologist, psychiatrist/psychologist, speech therapist and vision therapist. Examination, evaluation and therapy, depending upon the severity, is often expensive and long term.
